Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji on Tuesday approved the arrest and prosecution of Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his children Achola Dan Okoth, Susan Scarlet Okoth Jerry Zachary Okoth and Adhiambo Evelyn Okoth.
Governor Obado is separately battling murder charges. He is out on bond in the murder of Sharon Otieno who was brutally murdered while pregnant, days after making it known to his associates that he was responsible for the pregnancy. He denies killing her.
EACC has been investigating the Migori county boss for following reports that he stole public funds through companies registered by his relatives.
According to the DPP, the governor indirectly received Sh73.4 million from companies that traded with the devolved government during his first term in office.
According to a story appearing the the Daily Nation, Mr Haji said the four children separately received Sh34.5 million from Mr Obado’s companies and three brothers, who acted as proxies in some firms the county boss owned.
“Public money was lost through connivance of the governor and the business entities in payments made for performance of contracts,” Mr Haji said in a statement yesterday.
According to Capital news some county officials will also be charged and more than 15 businessmen and women-who won lucrative tenders through corruption at the county and later wired money to the governor and his children’s accounts.
“The investigations were in respect of Sh73.4 million being sums indirectly received by the Governor through his children who received multiple payments from companies trading with Migori County Government between 2013/2014 Financial Year and 2016/2017,” the DPP said in his statement, approving the arrests of the family.
