Esther 1: 9- 15

The name Vashti means a beautiful woman. She was the wife of King Xerxes. She was indeed beautiful and it’s the reason why the king was asking her to come and dance before him and his guests.

Vashti is a woman who is crucified wrongly and accused of not being respectful to the husband. I however want us to look at some facts of this story in order to understand her and the sacrifice she opted to pay and keep her dignity and her inner and outer beauty.

She was condemned in one night by his drunk husband. The king was drinking with his soldiers and his seven friends who advised the him. These are the men who hated Vashti with passion. The reason why they hated her was because she was firm, a no nonsense woman who would not just say yes to them and allow them to do what they just wanted at the Kings palace.

On this particular night, when the King was drunk and not himself; they pushed him to call her so that they could ashame her by causing her to dance before them while drunk. Vashti opted to sacrifice her position but remain a woman of dignity. Even when the same drunkards incited the king to divorce her immediately for her firm position, she never changed!

These are the reasons why Vashti who is wrongly accused of arrogance refused to go before the King on this night;

She respected herself;
She knew the respect the King and the wife of
the king deserved. She therefore respected
herself and opted to be humiliated rather than
lowering herself by dancing before the
drunkards. We should respect ourselves like

She refused to be used;
The role she was asked to play was a role
played by prostitutes. Vashti said No! They had
not invited her over when they were not drunk
but they waited until all of them were drunk to
invite her. Refuse also to be used by the Devil to
entertain the drunk world and it’s sins.

The King had broken the rights of women;
Women were required to stay away from men
and be in a completely separate room as it was
the case when they were calling Vashti from
where the women were. By telling her to go to
where the men were is like telling a woman
today to go before men naked. Vashti stood for
the rights of all women.

Only Concubines were used as such;
According to one author Herbert Lockyer,
concubines were used like that. Had Vashti
agreed to come and dance, that day she could
have become a shame and like a concubine of
the King in the eyes of everyone. She said no!
Likewise let us not do things which will lower
our spirituality and change our relationship
with God.

The beauty of the King’s wife belonged only to the  Kings eyes;
Because of the Kings drunkardness, he forgot
this and wanted to expose her beautiful wife to
disorderly drunkards. Vashti opted to keep her
dignity! We have no excuse also to yield to evil
or allow our physical beauty to be the entry
point of the Devil into our hearts and life.

So it’s the King who forgot himself and did a foolish thing. His helpers wanted to clear the Strong Vashti from their paths so that they could do whatever they wanted at the palace and with the drunk King. It was also illegal to have caused him to sign the divorce while drunk and without listening to the woman’s explanation.

But Vashti sacrificed her everything knowing the painful consequences so well. May the Lord help us to stand like Vashti even when we don’t have anyone to fight for us, even when we know generations after us will come and judge us wrongly like Vashti! Stand firm in the Lord!
